The Squishy Lady, Jennifer Awa, MPH developed ‘Squishy’ curriculum in 2010, while working in San Francisco County Jail. Ms. Awa was a health worker conducting HIV prevention services to inmates and providing health education workshops throughout the jail. This curriculum has evolved over time and continues to be enhanced as more information and research becomes available. Ms. Awa has been working in public health for over 15 years and has specialized in communicable disease prevention, reproductive/sexual health, and harm reduction.
Squishy is a term used to reference sex. It was innovated by the idea that a mouth, vagina, penis, and anus are ‘squishy’ and therefore a summarized idea of sex. It is a term that is sensitive across gender, race, class, religion, culture, and beliefs.
Squishy curriculum embraces harm reduction as an approach to discussing safer sex techniques, sexual health, prevention of HIV, STD’s and hepatitis through a nonjudgmental, compassionate, pragmatic approach. Squishy curriculum includes reproductive health and biology, prevention, contraception, harm reduction, substance use, and other auxiliary co-factors such as communication, survival, and culture.
I look forward to providing comprehensive, relevant, pragmatic, and consumer-centered information to all who is interested.
